CNN has unveiled a global initiative designed to showcase "ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary deeds".
The global news network will invite viewers to submit and nominate people whom they consider deserving of a CNN Hero Award in segments to air in the US starting in May and on CNN International in June.
The segments will air through September, ahead of a global telecast scheduled for Thursday, December 6 at 4pm UK/9pm ET. The CNN Hero Awards will air on CNN/US and CNN International and feature "musical performances and documentary tributes to those being honoured as well as to their accomplishments and continued work."
"Our journalists come across these individuals every single day on the job, but they do not always get to tell these inspiring stories," said CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton. "With the help of our global audience, we turn the spotlight on those people who serve as an example of how a single person can make a difference."
Awards will be given in categories including "Defending the Planet", "Fighting for Justice", "Community Crusader", "Medical Marvel", "Championing Children" and "Young Wonder".
Nomination forms are available on CNN's website.
