The Scottish Premier League has announced plans to develop its own television channel.
Proposals for the channel, which is expected to be available nationally on a premium basis, have been compiled over the past few months. All twelve clubs in the league have now agreed to take the plans to the next stage.
"Today, we held the latest in a series of meetings between the 12 clubs on the subject of broadcasting," said Lex Gold, SPL chairman. "I am delighted to announce that all 12 clubs have unanimously agreed to take the concept of the SPL Channel to the next stage, as the extensive work carried out into the concept to date has been extremely encouraging.
"Crucially, all 12 clubs realise the need to move ahead with this project on the basis of a minimum four-year timeframe, which will deliver stability for the league as a whole, enabling us to build upon the significant progress we have made since the launch of the SPL almost four years ago."
Roger Mitchell, SPL CEO, said that they are now "actively involved" in putting programming out to tender. "As we have publicly stated on a number of occasions during the past few months, the concept of a channel dedicated to Scotland's most popular sporting competition is one we have been working on for a considerable time, and indeed, interest in the initiative from external investors to date has been very encouraging," he said.
"We are now actively involved in the tender process for the programming and production. The concept of a channel was put forward to offer the clubs the most comprehensive range of broadcasting choice, and currently, the indications are that this route will deliver the maximum commercial benefits to all 12 clubs.
"There was also complete agreement amongst all 12 SPL shareholders that we should continue to build upon the positive work we have undertaken since 1998, particularly in the areas of standards of infrastructure, fixturing and our strong and growing commitment to Scottish youth development."
