Carr said in a statement: "I'm ecstatic – I love being on Channel 4 where I can be myself and let my hair down... what's left of it."

Channel 4's head of entertainment Justin Gorman added that channel bosses were "chuffed" Carr had chosen to stay with them.

Gorman said: "Alan embodies what is the heart of Channel 4 Entertainment. He's warm, witty and a little bit wild... We look forward to celebrating, over a sherry or two, his 100th episode of Chatty Man later in the year."

Carr's new deal is worth a reported £4 million, sources told The Mirror.

One source claimed that ITV attempted to poach the Chatty Man presenter as a possible replacement for Jonathan Ross, saying: "ITV felt they could make him even more mainstream and popular and pull in five million viewers with his shows.

"But for now, their only chat show host is Wossy."

The comedian is also said to be working on a sitcom pilot for Channel 4.

Carr was voted Digital Spy readers' 'Best Comedian' for a second year in a row in December.
