The BBC has suggested that Miranda will not be returning any time soon.

The show, written by and starring Miranda Hart, has proved a huge hit with viewers and made the move from BBC Two to BBC One for its third series.

However, BBC executive Shane Allen admitted at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch: "She is doing a live tour and then has film plans.

"The fourth series will probably be a long way off."

Hart recently laughed off polls naming her as viewers' favourite choice for a female Doctor on Doctor Who.

"Really? Who, me? Are you serious? That's hilarious," she said.

"I'm just surprised constantly by [my] popularity, let alone the fact [people] want me to be Doctor Who."
