The piece, published in May 1976, discusses the sci-fi show's title sequence and was published in a Who fanzine.

It was discovered by Doctor Who News reviewer and correspondent Matthew Kilburn and posted online.

In the article, Capaldi writes: "Watching the abstracted light forms & patterns which appear in the opening sequence of Dr. Who has become a familiar ritual for all of us.

"The wonder of the opening is that it manages to capture in only a very few moments of screen time the atmosphere of Dr. Who."

The actor, aged 18 at the time of writing, goes into extensive detail about the process of creating the title sequence, praising its ability to 'suspend our disbelief'.

Capaldi will film his first scenes as The Doctor in autumn and will appear on screen for the first time in this year's Christmas special. He will then star alongside Jenna Coleman in his first full series in 2014.
