'Strictly Come Dancing' returns with 8.43m on BBC One

Strictly Come Dancing's launch show was seen by 8.43m viewers (41.3%) on BBC One on Saturday (September 7), overnight data suggests.

The 8pm show, which revealed the 15 pairings for the new series, peaked with 9.13m at 7.45pm. The figure is 400,000 up on last year's launch ratings.

On ITV, rival The X Factor continued with 7.94m (36.3%) at 8pm (355k/1.8%), down 840k on last week's debut. It peaked at 8.59m at 8.30pm.

Back on BBC One, The National Lottery: Break the Safe scored 3.50m (16.1%) at 8.15pm, while Last Night at the Proms was watched by 4.11m (22%) at 9.15pm and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow pulled in 1.85m (15.3%) at 11pm.

On BBC Two, Dragons' Den aired from 6pm, with 720k (4.6%) tuning in. Dad's Army had 1.24m (6.2%) at 7pm and Last Night at the Proms interested 1.40m (6.5%) half an hour later.

Mock The Week earned 770k viewers (3.8%) from 9pm, after which 360 had 500k (2.9%) at 9.45pm.

On ITV, Stepping Out suffered against Strictly Come Dancing, falling 1.39m from last week's opener to 2.15m at 6.30pm. Through the Keyhole took 4.21m (20.9m) at 9pm (256k/1.4%) and movie Hell Boy II: The Golden Army was watched by 790k (6.6%) from 10.15pm.

On Channel 4, Double Your House For Half The Money and Grand Designs had 400k (1.9%) and 600k (2.7%) respectively from 7pm (39k/0.2% and 154k/0.8%). Horror movie Insidious followed with 1.30m (6.9%) at 9pm (311k/2.2%).

Elsewhere, North Sea Hijack appealed to 554k (2.9%) at 6.15pm (42k/0.2%) on Channel 5, while two episodes of NCIS took 766k (3.5%) and 1m (5%) from 8.15pm. The latest episode of Celebrity Big Brother interested 1.28m (7.1%) at 10pm (152k/1.4%) and Celebrity Big Brother's Bit on the Psych grabbed 501k (4.6%) an hour later (46k/0.8%).

The Xtra Factor was the highest rated broadcast on the multichannels, picking up 667k (3.3%) on ITV2 at 9pm.
