'The Apprentice': Week 12 Recap
Published Thursday, Jun 14 2007, 12:27 BST | By Nick Levine
For the final episode of The Apprentice Sir Alan set his most taxing task yet. He challenged the finalists - Kristina and Simon - to design a landmark building in central London. Sir Alan urged his protegés to create a meaningful, innovative design that would also make sound commercial sense.
The finalists were assisted by eight of The Apprentice's previous candidates. Simon promised his team - Tre, Lohit, Jadine and Rory - a trip to Barcelona if he won the task. Kristina chose to work with Adam, Naomi, Natalie and Paul.
Simon was initially impressed by Tre's idea of a building in the shape of a ship, but ultimately decided to follow Rory's more innovative suggestion. The eventual design, which Simon christened 'The Wave', was bold, imposing and innovative.
Kristina's inital idea - an oblong building with eagle statues on top - was vetoed because it had "fascist connotations". Her eventual design, which she named 'The Phoenix', was less innovative than Simon's, but made sound business sense thanks to its split of residential and office space.
In the boardroom Sir Alan asked the finalists to highlight their key skills. Simon admitted that he was far from the finished article, but promised to "work his cotton socks off" if he was hired. Kristina drew attention to her leadership skills and vowed to "bring home the money" if she became Sir Alan's apprentice.
Sir Alan decided to hire Simon, saying: "Bloody fool as I am, I'm going to take that risk. Simon, you're hired."
