Weekend roundup: Pop Idol lands 13m

The Pop Idol was a healthy ratings winner for ITV1, pulling in an average of 13.1m (57.0%) over the hour starting 19.10, with a peak of 13.9m (59.4%). Millionaire followed with 7.9m (33.9%) at 20.10, rising to 8.9m (38.2%) for a short recap of the Pop Idol performances at 21.00. Another Audience with Ken Dodd averaged 8.3m (35.8%) from 21.05. The Pop Idol Result show went on air from 22.05, drawing an average of 11.6m (49.0%), peaking at 12.8m (53.8%) when Will was announced the winner.

On BBC1, Jim Davidson's Generation Game dropped further to an embarrassing 3.4m (16.2%) from 18.40, followed by The National Lottery Jet Set with 4.6m (19.7%) from 19.35. Casualty was the channel's most popular show of the evening, with an audience of 7.7m (33.0%) from 20.10.

A BBC News bulletin at 9pm drew 5.6m (23.7%), with the premiere of Will Smith movie Enemy of the State drawing 6.1m (28.2%) quarter of an hour later.

Overall during peaktime, ITV1 managed a massive 10.0m (43.2%) average, up 2m and 6 points on last week; compared to BBC One's 5.6m (24.1%). BBC Two took 1.6m (6.9%), followed by Channel 5 and C4 with 1.2m (5.4%) and 1.2m (5.1%) respectively.

Sunday

The return of Michael Barrymore's My Kind of Music to ITV1 at 18.30 pulled just 5.2m (24.6%). On BBC1, Stig of the Dump and an 18.30 BBC News bulletin averaged 3.5m and 5.3m (25.2%) respectively. Last of the Summer Wine followed at 19.05 with an average of 6.1m.

Later in the evening, ITV's new two-part drama The Swap opened with a healthy 7.4m (35.6%), against BBC1's Playing The Field, which concluded with 3.7m (15.8%). The BBC Ten O'Clock News was down to 3.4m (15.8%), with Panorama pulling 2.3m (11.8%) from 22.15.

On Channel 4, Andy Warhol: The Complete Picture concluded with 0.9m (3.8%) from 20.00, rising to 1.6m (7.0%) for Bremner, Bird and Fortune an hour later. Sci-fi flick The Fifth Element averaged 2.7m (18.9%) starting 22.00.

BBC2's sport lineup performed well, meanwhile, taking average audiences of 2.7m (12.0%) and 2.9m (23.2%) for live snooker (8pm) and Winter Olympics (10pm) coverage.

Overall during peaktime, ITV1 attracted an average 9.2m (40.3%); close on three times that of BBC One, which limped in with 3.8m (16.5%). BBC Two was third with 2.7m (11.6%), followed by Channel 5 with 1.6m (6.8%), and C4 with 1.5m (6.6%).
