The former newspaper editor, who appeared as a judge on Britain's Got Talent this month, is expected to sign a £3 million three-year deal with the broadcaster. He could be offered his own prime-time chat show following this week's announcement that the next series of Parkinson will be the last.
An ITV source told the Daily Mail: "Piers wants to be the next Parkinson in the eyes of the British public and ITV's director of television Simon Shaps and ITV executive chairman Michael Grade are desperate to sign him up on a big exclusive three-year-deal.
"ITV adores him - and they want him on a golden handcuffs deal. After Britain's Got Talent he has become a big star."
