Pop Idol: Will single shifts 385,000

Will Young' debut single shifted 385,000 copies in its first day of release, according to early figures.

The double A-side, "Anything Is Possible" and "Evergreen", failed to beat Elton John's record of 658,000 in a day for "Candle In The Wind", but is on track to beat Popstars winners Hear'Say's debut single, "Pure and Simple", which sold 550,000 in its first week.

"It's not even close to Elton John's Candle In The Wind but it is the biggest first day sales for a single by a debut act," David Roberts of the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles told Ananova. "It's also looking good for beating Hear'Say to be the fastest selling debut single of all time. I would have thought that the record company will have begun pressing more copies of it as they might end up in an embarrassing position of running out next week."
