Following this month’s conviction of the failed 21/7 London bombers, CNN is showing a documentary that aims to get into the minds of the terrorists.
Captured: The Trail of Terror uses the CCTV evidence which ultimately secured the men’s convictions as a basis for correspondent Paula Newton’s investigation, and reveals the typical behavioural patterns that might identify a potential terrorist.
Newton uses eye-witness accounts of the events of 21/7 and the insights of Stephen Swain, who tracked international terrorism trends for the Metropolitan Police, in her attempt to answer why the men chose to execute their plan in a city where their every move is monitored by CCTV.
The programme also aims to offer an insight into how members of the public might safeguard themselves against further attacks.
Paula Newton, international security correspondent, said: "The programme should leave no-one in any doubt about the power at the disposal of prosecutors when a city is packed with CCTV cameras. It also gives us incredible insight, I believe, into the different ways people react to events like this. A few confront; most run away. I'm not being judgmental - I'm just watching the images. And interpreting them as best I can."
Captured: The Trail of Terror airs on CNN International Friday July 20 at 5.30pm in the UK, repeated at 1pm and 9pm on Saturday July 21, and at 10am and 6pm on Sunday July 22.
