BBC Drama has announced a star-studded cast for its new feature-length production of the 1936 bestselling novel by Noel Streatfeild.

Ballet Shoes will see Victoria Wood, Richard Griffiths, and Marc Warren join Dame Eileen Atkins, Emilia Fox, Gemma Jones, Robert Hardy, Lucy Cohu, Harriet Walter, Lucy Boynton, Yasmin Paige and Emma Watson in the Granada production for BBC One.

Patrick Spence, head of drama, BBC Northern Ireland, said: "The mix of hugely prestigious and burgeoning talent is as close to perfection as any cast could be."

Set in Thirties London, Ballet Shoes tells the tale of orphans Pauline (Emma Watson), Petrova (Yasmin Paige) and Posy Fossil (Lucy Boynton) who are adopted by an eccentric explorer, Great Uncle Matthew (Richard Griffiths) and raised as sisters by his selfless niece, Sylvia (Emilia Fox).

The story revolves around each girl's struggle to fulfil her dreams: Pauline longs to be an actress, Petrova yearns to be an aviator, and Posy seems born to be a ballerina, but their lives are turned upside down when their Uncle disappears and the money starts to run out.

The production has been adapted by I Capture The Castle, Lilies and Cranford Chronicles writer Heidi Thomas. She said: "This is a captivating cast, worthy in every way of Streatfeild's gorgeous book. Emma Watson is a magical young actress. We are thrilled to have her on board."

Filming begins this month, and is being directed by Sandra Goldbacher and produced by Piers Wenger. The executive producers for Granada are Michele Buck and Damien Timmer. Executive producers for the BBC are Patrick Spence and Heidi Thomas.
