Jane Asher and Rupert Evans have signed up to appear in a new ITV1 drama about a fictional royal family.

The Palace will follow the monarchs in the aftermath of the death of King James III, with Evans playing the King of England, and his alcoholic mother played by Asher.

The drama was created by Tom Grieves, with Chris Lang, Toby Whithouse and Charlotte Jones, and will be made by independent production team Company Pictures.

ITV Drama controller, Sally Haynes said: "The Palace is the ultimate precinct drama which delights in exploring the upstairs/downstairs relationship between the royal family and their servants.”

It will be filmed in Lithuania.
