'Inspector Lynley' gets the chop

The BBC has axed dectective drama The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

A BBC spokeswoman told Broadcast that the broadcaster needed to "move on from some pieces like the Inspector Lynley Mysteries in order to allow new work to come through."

The show has achieved decent ratings in the past, with a repeat earlier this month managing 4.2 million viewers and a 21.5% share. The sixth and final series of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries - cut from four episodes to two - will be shown later this year.

Actor Nathaniel Parker, who plays Lynley, told the Daily Mail: "My initial reaction was: 'But why?' The ratings were always so good...You try to be resigned about these things, but I was a little bewildered … I wish they'd given us the chance to do a sign-off to tie up all the loose ends. Instead, it's just been abandoned."
