ITV has commissioned a new peaktime quiz show from French TV for next year.

Duel is an hour-long show where contestants battle head-to-head win a cash jackpot, facing total elimination from the show if they make just one error of judgement.

The show has been devised by French TV. Founded in 2001 by Francis Vacher, the company has created a number of programmes in France and Switzerland such as That's The Question (Télé la Question) and an adaptation of BBC’s arts programme Star Portraits.

The eight part series will be produced by Gallowgate productions and TX on ITV1 in a peaktime slot for early 2008.

ITV's controller of entertainment, Duncan Gray, who commissioned the show, said: "The second Ed Forsdick [Gallowgate] and I played Duel I was hooked. It’s a compelling game which I hope will make a great TV show. I'm delighted that both French TV and Gallowgate productions will chose to work with ITV to put Duel on air in the UK."

French TV are also planning to take Duel to the US, with an announcement from a "major US network" due shortly.
