Bebo has commissioned a new online drama backed by an initiative to recruit unknown young actors to star in the series.
Sofia’s Diary, which will air this autumn, is written by Danny Stack and produced by Sony Pictures Television International.
The series will see Bebo search for new talent under the age of 21 to play the five key starring roles. Budding actors can record and post their video audition tapes on the social networking site before September 28, with live auditions being held in London on Monday October 1.
Sofia’s Diary tells the story of Sofia who, after an incident in a school chemistry lab, is sent to London to live with her dad and step-mum and brother, but still tries to keep in touch with her friends.
The series was originally launched in Portugal in 2003 as an experimental web and mobile service. It now has 200,000 visitors per month online, over 19,000 mobile subscribers and has run for four series on Portuguese state broadcaster, RTP2. It has since been adapted for audiences in the US, Germany, Brazil, Chile, Turkey and Vietnam.
Bebo international president Joanna Shields said: "We’re thrilled to be reaching out to our users and inviting them to be a very real part of this hugely exciting project. Sofia’s Diary is a hit worldwide and has the chance to propel the UK cast from unknowns to stars. I encourage all young hopefuls to audition through Bebo for this chance of a lifetime!"
The new initiative builds on the success of online drama KateModern which has drawn over 8 million views in just eight weeks.
