News station CNN celebrates 20 years of broadcasting today. On 1st June, 1980, the channel began broadcasting from Atlanta, Georgia, with a limited audience of just 1.7 million households.
Ten years later, that figure had risen to 60 million. 'CNN International', broadcasting to homes in Europe, was launched in 1985, encouraging the growth of satellite television.
Channel boss Ted Turner, said of the channel in March 1980, "We'll sign on June 1st; we won't sign off until the end of the world.. and we'll cover that live".
Several special programmes will be aired on the station today and tomorrow to mark the occasion.
