'Pride and Prejudice' with twist for ITV
Published Wednesday, Oct 3 2007, 11:07 BST | By Alex Fletcher
ITV has begun filming a production of Pride and Prejudice with a contemporary twist.
Lost In Austen will tell the story of a modern-day heroine who gets the chance to swap lives with a Jane Austen character and live her life in Georgian Britain.
Amanda Price, played by Jemima Rooper, discovers the Pride And Prejudice character Elizabeth Bennet (Gemma Arteton) living in her water closet, and the pair take the opportunity to switch places.
Price discovers that her 21st Century values don't fit in with her new society following the swap, and is horrified to discover that she ends up altering the storyline to her favourite novel.
The production will also feature Alex Kingston as Mrs Bennet, Hugh Bonneville playing the role of Mr Bennet, and Lindsay Duncan as Lady Catherine. Mr Darcy will be played by Elliot Cowen.
Controller of Drama Commissioning for ITV, Sally Haynes, said: "Lost in Austen has the high production values of period drama. Its sumptuous period locations, costume, carriages and props are juxtaposed with Amanda Price's very modern lifestyle.
"The cleverness of the script will appeal to Austen aficionados and attract a new audience to this beautiful love story."
The script has been written by Guy Andrews, who has worked on Prime Suspect, Lewis and Chancer. Michele Buck and Damien Timmer, of Lewis and Housewife 49 fame, are the executive producers.
