Five News airs 'Straight 8' reporting
Published Wednesday, Oct 3 2007, 16:59 BST | By Joanne Oatts
Five News will tonight air its first ever news report filmed in a 'Straight 8' style.
Five News correspondent Ruth Liptrot’s piece will preview independent film company Straight 8’s Cannes 12 film screening tomorrow at the Raindance Film Festival in London.
The Straight 8 style involves using one Super 8 film cartridge with no editing allowed. Liptrot’s two and a half minute short will be edited "in-camera," meaning she and cameraman Philip Bloom can only edit by switching the video camera on or off.
The report will be filmed sequentially starting with a piece to camera from Liptrot explaining how news reports are usually done and how this one is different. Voiceovers will be done as the camera rolls and all interviews, including one with Straight 8 co-founder Ed Sayer, will be filmed in one take. The piece will air today on Five in its 5.30pm bulletin.
Five news editor David Kermode said: "This was a real challenge for Philip and Ruth. I don't think I've ever seen this done before in news. We're willing to experiment at Five News and we promise to run this regardless of how it turns out. So fingers crossed for them!"
