ITV1 has agreed a deal with Dangerous Films for big-budget drama Moon Shot.
The 90-minute film, due to air next summer, will tell the story of the first manned moon landing on its 40th anniversary.
Dangerous will be joined by ITV1, Discovery Channel, Germany’s ProSieben and TF1 as co-producers and filming will start in the new year.
Hollywood Babylon creator Tony Basgallop will write the script, Dangerous's co-founder Richard Dale will executive produce and Tim Goodchild will produce.
They aim to get a "big American cast" for the roles of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin.
The film, Dangerous's biggest project, has a budget of about $5 million and will combine reconstruction with computer generated effects and NASA archive footage.
ITV controller of popular factual Jo Clinton-Davis told Broadcast: "This ambitious factual drama from a top-quality team will bring a new understanding to a story that gripped the world.
"We are delighted to be the British partner in this landmark project commemorating a landmark anniversary."
