Chadha arrived at Clifton school in Southall on Monday to rehearse with year 6 pupils before returning to film and direct the final version today.
A behind-the-scenes film of the production is being shot by Sky Movies and will be aired on Christmas Eve.
Chadha, who was recently linked to the forthcoming Dallas movie, said: ‘'This is the first time that I have gone back to my old school and am thrilled to be working with the children. I feel very touched to have been asked to help out."
Sky Movies Director Ian Lewis said: "The Nativity play is a Christmas institution but to have it in the hands of such a renowned film director is a festive first. So we’re delighted to have it on Sky Movies as part of our Christmas week line-up."
He added: "Indeed, we hope this will be the first of what will become an annual event where we ask Hollywood directors to sprinkle a little Hollywood magic on a school nativity."
Chadha, who also directed Bride and Prejudice, attended Clifton School during the 1960s. She was made an OBE in 2006.
The full nativity play will be available to view on the Sky Movies website.
