Report: UK format creation crown slipping
Published Friday, Dec 28 2007, 09:41 GMT | By Dave West
The UK's lead in television format creation continued to slip this year, according to new figures.
A FremantleMedia report put home producers' share of the global sales market at 33%, falling from 50% in 2005. Indies accounted for 88% of this year's total.
The UK's closest competitors this year were the US and the Netherlands which were both at 21%. This has been put down to the success of new game shows from the countries - with shows of that genre rising by 30%.
Fremantle's report also noted formats are now spreading worldwide faster than ever. An example cited is US show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which became Are You Smarter Than a 10-Year-Old for Sky One, and made it to 22 other countries in eight months.
Simon Cowell's Got Talent format, produced with Fremantle, was broadcast in the UK in the spring and has reached nine countries.
Fremantle chief executive Tony Cohen said that despite the UK's slipping lead it was not likely to lose the number one spot for some time.
