US TV star Suzanne Pleshette has passed away, aged 70.

Pleshette, who had battled lung cancer for nearly a decade and underwent chemotherapy in 2006, died from respiratory failure at her LA home on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

The actress is most famous for her role as Emily Hartley in The Bob Newhart Show between 1972-78, which won her two Emmy nominations.

She reprised the sitcom role for the 1990 show finale, which was rated by critics as one of the cleverest endings of all time.

Pleshette married her Newhart co-star Tom Poston in 2000 and remained with him until he died last April from respiratory failure.

She starred most recently in Will & Grace, 8 Simple Rules, and Good Morning Miami.
