Published Sunday, Aug 4 2002, 14:29 BST | By James Welsh
Carmen Silvera, the actress who shot to fame in the 1980s for her role as Edith Artois in hit BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 80.
Silvera was diagnosed with lung cancer in April, and resolved to battle it without treatments such as chemotherapy. She celebrated her 80th birthday in June, and was working last year in the comedy You Only Live Twice.
Gorden Kaye, who played Rene Artois in 'Allo 'Allo, said: "Carmen was a lovely lady. She was ditsy - she always left her spectacles all over the place - she was clumsy - you had to be careful not to sit next to her during a black tie dinner - she was fun and she had a wicked sense of humour.
"We expected this, but not quite so soon. It's going to be a difficult time ahead. She was a good friend."
