Men Behaving Badly star Leslie Ash is to join the cast of BBC One drama Merseybeat in its third season, it was announced today by the corporation's controller of continuing drama series, Mal Young.

Leslie will play the role of Inspector Charlie Eden, and will have a "straight talking and no nonsense attitude".

Young said: "Leslie is a fantastic actress and will be a great addition to an already strong and talented cast. Series two of Merseybeat is proving very popular with the audience and I'm sure they will be waiting in eager anticipation for series three which will be on our screens in the Autumn - and of Leslie's first appearance as Charlie."

Ash added: "I am really excited to be joining such a great show and talented cast. Charlie is bound to upset a few of the Newton Park officers as she has no problem in speaking her mind and definitely knows where her loyalties lie."

Filming for the upcoming third season of the series is currently ongoing in the North West, and is scheduled to be completed by October. It will be transmitted in the Autumn.
