ITV has commissioned a new three part drama from the team behind Wire in the Blood.

Production will commence in April on A Place of Execution, based on Val McDermid's best-selling novel. Billed as a "taut psychological thriller", the drama "explores, exposes and explodes the borderline between reality and illusion in a multi-layered narrative that turns expectations on their heads".

It follows the story of a police officer who tells the story of an investigation into the disappearance of a 13 year old girl to a writer who subsequently discovers new evidence that "shatters the past and turns the world upside down".

Sandra Jobling, executive producer for Coastal Productions, said: "We're really excited about this project. A Place of Execution is a fascinating tale and we are looking forward to producing this brand new three part drama in collaboration with ITV."

ITV's controller of drama commissioning Sally Haynes added: "We are thrilled to commission A Place of Execution and are delighted to be working with Patrick Harbinson, the writer who will be adapting the original novel by Val McDermid for ITV. It's also a great opportunity to build on our relationship with Coastal Productions, following the success of Wire in The Blood."

Casting has yet to be announced for the project.
