BBC One's Mistresses held a steady audience of 4.7m last night to beat ITV1's Ladette to Lady.

The hour-long drama took a 19.8% share at 9pm and has kept most viewers since debuting with 4.9m on January 8. The show is failing to make last year's slot average of 5m or 21.4%, however.

On ITV1 Ladette to Lady's audience rose slightly to 3.8m, or 16.2%, trailing the channel's 2007 average for the time of 4.4m or 18.8%.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, also at 9pm, took a strong audience of 3.4m, 14.5%, for Five, out-pacing the 2.6m, 11%, slot average. Unlike previous series the current run has maintained figures since 3.4m watched the first on January 15.

On BBC Two the Is Alcohol Worse than Ecstasy? Horizon took 2.1m, 8.8%, with Channel 4's Medicine Men Go Wild trailing on 1.4m, or 5.8%.

In the soaps battle the hour-long Emmerdale made a 7.3m or 32.9% average for ITV1 while EastEnders struggled at 6.8m, or 29.4%, from 7.30pm. The former dipped from a high of 8.1m to 6.1m once EastEnders started, however.

On multichannel, True Stories: Dave Gorman in America Unchained won More 4 a very strong audience with 449,000, or 3.4% of eligible homes.

The comedy at 10.45pm trounced the channel's slot average of 71,000, 0.6%, for last year, and 13,000 more watched on More 4+1.

The show was the third most popular this year trailing episodes of Come Dine With Me and ER.
