Some 642,000 viewers, a 4.16% share in multichannel homes, tuned in for the drama's debut at 10pm.
It trounced the slot's average last year of 90,000 (0.61%). A further 102,000 (1.19%) tuned in an hour later on Virgin 1's staggercast.
The total audience was also five times the slot's average performance of 156,000 so far this year.
Sarah Connor's strong showing still could not match all the digital competition, though. On BBC Three the EastEnders repeat gained 1.2m (7.06%) at 10pm. Uefa Cup coverage of Spurs and Sparta Prague, on ITV4 from 7pm to 10pm, attracted 986,000 (4.91%).
ITV2 also faired well earlier with Coleen's Real Women gaining a 542,000 (2.59%) audience at 9pm. Doc Martin, on ITV3 at 10pm, earned 459,000 (2.97%) viewers, while More 4 reached 567,000 (3.68%) with ER at 10pm.
