Sissons to leave Ten O'Clock News

Peter Sissons is to step down from the BBC's 10pm news bulletin, according to the Sunday Times today.

The veteran presenter, who has been with the corporation for 13 years, will most likely move on to rolling news station BBC News 24. His decision to quit the flagship bulletin comes just weeks after fellow anchor Michael Buerk announced his retirement.

The BBC will replace the pair with a "single senior presenter," coinciding with a change in focus of the programme to appeal to a wider audience, in particular young females.

BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey is said to favour Fiona Bruce, presenter of the 6pm bulletin. Bruce has previously said that the job would have "too much of an impact" on her young family, however.

Also in the frame for a role is George Alagiagh, who fronts the BBC Four News bulletin.
