The BBC will shift its evening news programme from 9pm to 10pm early next year, according to a report in The Independent today.
The move will be subject to certain conditions, BBC Chairman Christopher Bland told the Commons Culture Select Committee last week.
The BBC hopes that it will increase the number of viewers for the evening programme, following a huge decline in audience figures for ITV's bulletin after it switched from 10pm to 11pm.
The new programme will air next Spring. It is understood that BBC Director-General Greg Dyke would have liked to introduced the change sooner, but is holding out for more comedy and drama programming to fill the 9pm - 10pm slot.
