The quarter-final second leg from 7.45pm, which Liverpool won 4-2, reached a peak of 9.5m, or 38.2% of the audience, at 9.30pm.
Simultaneous coverage of Chelsea's tie in the tournament also drew strong ratings for ITV4. The match was watched by 621,000 (2.9%) from 7.45pm as Chelsea secured their place in the next round with a 2-0 victory over Fenerbahce.
Unsurprisingly, BBC One's ratings took a hit from the football. Holby City attracted 5.4m (21.7%) - down from 6.2m (25.4%) last week - at 8pm, then 4.1m (16.9%) watched Hotel Babylon at 9pm - 500,000 fewer than the previous instalment.
Channel 4 managed to hold a good audience at 8pm thanks to the return of How to Look Good Naked. The Gok Wan-fronted show was watched by 2.6m (10.5%) - 400,000 more than the average for the slot.
University Challenge: The Professionals, on BBC Two at the time, was watched by 1.8m (7.1%), while Five drew just 1.1m (4.5%) at 8pm for Big, Bigger, Biggest.
