A quarter of the available audience tuned in to the US drama at 9pm, safely exceeding the channel's 5.2m (23.8%) slot average. A large number of viewers switched off during the show, however, with the 6.4m (27.2%) starting audience dropping off to 4.6m (21.2%) by 9.45pm.
The programme was helped by a huge lead-in audience from Britain's Got Talent. The second series got underway at 7.45pm and recorded 8.8m (37%) viewers - well above ITV's 5.9m (27.8%) average for the timeslot.
The return of Talent dealt a big blow to BBC One's reality offering I'd Do Anything. The show drew 5.4m (22.6%) at 7.35pm, down from 6.8m (30.3%) in the previous week.
Earlier on, BBC One had the lead thanks to an audience of 8.1m (36.7%) for Doctor Who. The sci-fi favourite, on at 6.45pm, was down 300,000 on last week's series opener but led ITV1 teatime newcomer All Star Mr and Mrs.
The revived entertainment format drew a respectable 6.3m (28.5%) viewers from 6.45pm, though, and exceeded the slot average by 2.1m.
