Gerard Kearns has admitted to enjoying his training regime for his role in BAFTA-winning Channel 4 drama The Mark of Cain.
The 23-year-old, best known for playing Ian Gallagher in Shameless, stars as a soldier facing a court martial for abusing prisoners while on duty in Iraq.
Speaking after Cain's victory in the best single drama category, Kearns said: "We had two weeks [to prepare]. We had a week of classroom work then a week of training. The physical aspect was better than going through all the stripes and who's who and all that.
"It was fantastic to train up, and to get in the role of it physically and mentally is what every actor asks for when they're playing a part."
