Deayton fired from 'News For You'

Angus Deayton is to step down from Have I Got News For You with "immediate effect".

The announcement is the outcome of a meeting between Deayton, 45, and the BBC's head of entertainment Jane Lush this afternoon, and comes after continued revelations about the presenter's private life in the press.

"The BBC and Hat Trick productions, the makers of Have I Got News For You, have asked Angus Deayton to step down as host of BBC One's satirical news quiz with immediate effect," said a statement from the BBC.

"It is felt by all concerned that continuing stories in the media about Angus' private life have made him the subject of headlines rather than a commentator on them. This has made his position as host of the topical news quiz untenable."

Team captain Paul Merton will stand in as host of the programme this week whilst a replacement is sought.
