Monty Don has quit working on Gardeners' World after suffering a minor stroke.

The TV presenter was hospitalised in April, but BBC bosses initially claimed he would only be "taking a break" from the show.

However, following an extended break with his family it is believed the 52-year-old decided there was too much pressure working on the TV show.

In a statement, Don said: "I am proud to have led Gardeners' World for five years and have enjoyed every minute. I intend to make a full recovery so I am ready to tackle new projects."

A BBC spokesperson added: "Monty will be sorely missed. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to work with him again."
