Q&A: Greg Grunberg teases 'Heroes' future

Warning: This article contains spoilers about the final episodes of Heroes season four that some readers may prefer to avoid.

You've got to feel sorry for Matt Parkman. He's not had the easiest of rides - afflicted by personal strife and an ongoing battle with that bothersome body-snatcher, Sylar. Now, just as he thinks he's getting his life back on track, Parkman's nemesis is back for one final burst of revenge. We caught up with Greg Grunberg to find out what's to come in this season's final few episodes of Heroes and get the latest on those persistent cancellation rumours.

Are you pleased with Matt's journey on Heroes this season?
"I am actually, I've been pretty happy with what they've given me. Every year they make my character more and more important to the story, to the history of these characters and where they're going. So I can't complain! At the end of last season they turned to Matt to take Sylar down, then he begrudgingly did it, knowing there would be consequences. Again, he just wants to have a normal life and a family, but it's not going to happen."

You had some awesome scenes with Zach in the first half of the season. How was it working with him again?
"Zach's the best. He's amazing and a great guy. The two of us have a kind of shorthand when we work together, so we can step on each other a bit and the dialogue flows more naturally. It was cool because I got to imitate him a bit, when he was controlling my body. We had a lot of fun with it."

Some of the scenes were quite dark, but bizarrely, also really funny.
"Yeah, which is great. That's what I love. It's a really delicate balance but it's exactly what you just said, there's also a comedic edge - he's so good at doing that."

There are just three episodes left this season. What's to come?
"The remaining episodes this season, Matt gets very dark. He tries once and for all to take care of Sylar. Some would say he does succeed. It's really dark, and he almost gets possessed in his obsession with ending this chapter of his life. I hope it's gonna scare people and they see a side of Matt Parkman they've never seen. When I read the script I was like 'Oh my God, this guy's really gonna do whatever it takes.' He's already basically killed himself to get rid of Sylar before, but now he's doing something that's just disturbing."

It's such a shame, because he just seems to be back on the right path. How will this affect his relationship with Janice going forward?
"What I'm talking about that he does, he does it in his house. So basically all bets are off. He discusses it with his wife - it's one of those things where your back's up against the wall and you have no choice but to deal with it. I think it's an interesting way and a good thing."

I read some quotes from you about the end of this season where you say there is no way this could be a series finale. Does it end on a cliffhanger then? Most of the volumes wrap themselves up.
"What I like about our show is that you'll end the volume and then start the next volume at the end of a season. There's a bit of that, but what I was talking about is that it's not really an appropriate ending to a show like this. I think you just really need to wrap up these stories. You owe it to the audience to do it in a great way, and I don't think we're anywhere near doing that, so that's why it just doesn't seem possible that this would be the last season for our show."

When do you think you'll find out if you've been renewed?
"We should find out soon. The writers need some lead-time to write the episodes so we should find out this week, maybe next week. I dunno."

Recently we caught up with Masi Oka, who suggested that season five would be a reboot with a new league of Heroes. What do you think of that idea? Is it realistic?
"No, I think he's crazy! It's kind of a cool idea, but at the same time, they've kind of tried that already. Season two, they brought in all these new heroes and it just didn't work. People really want to identify with the characters they signed on to take the ride with at the beginning. I just don't think that would work on our show."

You've had some really strong stories this year, but unfortunately, the ratings have dropped off throughout the season. Why do you think that is?
"I think NBC altogether has had a problem holding the audience. They used to be the number one network, and it was easy to launch off another show. They moved us around, time-wise, to 8pm, but I don't think we're an 8pm show, we're a 9pm show. Now we're back to 9pm but they didn't let anyone know they were doing that - literally, no-one knew! So I don't know, it's one of those things that's very difficult to say. I think NBC has much bigger problems than just the dip in the ratings for Heroes. I think we're in a good position to come back in a strong way. But there are so many factors leading in to it and NBC's getting such a bad rap right now, so who knows? Hopefully they're going to find a new identity."

But with everything that's happening, particularly with Leno, it's kind of good for you guys in a way, because it gives you a greater chance of being renewed.
"Yeah, if they didn't renew us, they'd then have six hours of TV to replace. But you know, stranger things have happened. It just doesn't feel like the end of our show - both on the business side, or story-wise."

Halfway through this season, we sadly lost Adrian Pasdar as Nathan. What's it been like without him around?
"It's always tough when something like that happens, and especially when it's someone like Adrian, who's such an anchor as a person. He's a guy that everybody leans on and he's got more experience than anybody. He's a great actor and a good guy. He plays in the Band On TV with me, Hugh Laurie and James Denton, so I have the advantage of seeing him all the time, but I'm going to miss seeing him on screen. Some of my best stuff was when Parkman and Nathan partnered up. But it's the nature of these shows - characters have to go, and he understood that."

What's the latest with the Band From TV?
"We just finished building our own space. The band is cookin'! Our website at bandfromtv.org tells you when we're playing next. Every penny of our proceeds goes to the charities and right now is the most important time, with what's happened in Haiti. We're going to the Fallsview Casino in Canada in March, right above Niagara Falls, which is going to be a great gig for us, then we come back here for a couple dates."

Is it possible you might do Idol Gives Back again this year?
"If they ask, we'd love to. That was a blast, so great and we had a really good time doing it."

You've confirmed you're back on Lost for the final season, albeit briefly. Was it much work?
"No. Very, very briefly. Hahaha!"

It was just audio?
"Erm... you gotta watch to see! My schedule's insane right now, with the band, Heroes and my iPhone app, so I couldn't do much, but it was great. When those guys asked me to come back, I jumped at the chance. I love working with Damon, Carlton and JJ."

As for Heroes, whenever it does end, where would you like to see Matt end up?
"I would like to see Matt end up in some sort of authoritative position, like in the military or Homeland Security, at the same time as having his home life in order, raising his kid with his wife. Just being happy. Kind of coming back to the simple stuff."

Is that likely?
"I hope so! But I doubt it. I think they're going to end our show in some kind of big action way, and I'm sure - well, I hope - I'll be involved in that. Then again, there's so many stories to wrap up that you have to assume Matt goes back to his normal life! I dunno. Anything could happen."

Heroes continues Mondays at 9pm on NBC.

What do you think of the upcoming Matt-Sylar showdown? Should Sylar be killed off for good? And do you think Heroes will be back for a fifth season? Add your comments to this entry below!

I really love the show when it started and I think that the show should get a least one more season to tie up loose ends and hopefully redeem itself. However in order to do that they have to get back to what made season one great. An unforgetable villain that you really want to see the heroes stop. Less focus on the less important characters, and more focus on the ones the every one loves like Peter, Clair, and Hiro. But that will only work if they give Peter back all his abilities and turn hiro back into the sword carrying, time traveling hero he was. That's part of what made them awesome, changing that is killing the show.

I agree that Heroes showed quite a bit of potential during Season 1. The follow-up was a downward slide to the bottom of the pile. Although the strike didn't help matters, it also didn't help there were too many main characters. Or so they were made to think they were main characters... Two, maybe three of the main characters in season one, had the spark capable of driving a show like Heroes to success. A number of the other characters were flavorless fluff, and too much screen time was devoted to their mediocre performances. Matt Parkman is an example.. Don't blame the writers. A good actor can make the most boring script compelling. Matt Parkman was a supporting character at best, yet, we're supposed to care that this self-described "everyman", as he is showing us his "human" side.. It's bland at best, and at worst, D-Class acting when you peel back the glorified layers of his star-struck delivery of lines. How could the producers believe that Mr. Grunberg was ever capable of contributing to the show's epic potential? If I wanted an example of every man, I'd just watch the news.. Maybe, it was nepotism at work here. Maybe Tim thought that Greg's experience as a supporting actor on "Alias" and "Felicity" was good enough for Heroes. In my humble opinion, it was characters like Matt Parkman that contributed to the show's failure, while the the sparkling stars (calling Hayden, Milo, Masi, George) could not overcome being pulled down by the overwhelming number of mediocre actors that were signed. It didn't help that Greg was parading around like a cheerleader touting his iPhone App, while using 'Heroes' as the platform to his fame. Michael C. Hall doesn't have an app. He doesn't need one. This is why Mr. Hall is winning awards. Cheap over-exposure like that, hurt the show's and the actor's reputation for me. It destroyed what little illusion was left. The message it sent me was this; Greg's busy with the show, but hey, it may not be successful, so why not build an app. Free publicity for Heroes. That's what the NBC brass was likely thinking. Publicity like that is what cancels shows. It's not enough that Greg was twittering his way to oblivion, with his shameless self-promotions, tantrums about another mind reading cop show stealing his spotlight, and how he is best mind reader on NBC. His pathetic self-promotions sent shivers down my spine. Doesn't this guy have an agent? That would be fine, if he detached himself from the show while promoting those ideas, but the very fact he paraded around waving the 'I'm a STAR on Heroes' flag, go buy my App, was classless and flagrant in my opinion. Finding that the app was completely useless after I ran it, was a testament for me, on Greg's character (and that of NBC for letting him utilize the show as a launching platform for his garbage). I was really hoping the show would be better. I thought, here we have a prime time show capable of being the TV equivalent of X-Men or Fantastic Four. What a true shame.. It's too late to salvage this wreck. I did a little research into Greg's previous projects. He has proclaimed in his 15 minutes of Hollow Man fame, that his fantasy would be to have the power of invisibility, and having sex with every woman he meets, without them knowing it (like an invisible porn star). Look it up, I'm not kidding. No wonder Ali wanted to leave Heroes. This guy even wrote a movie called 'Group Sex'. Not sure if it was ever released.. Now is it this the type of "main character" you expect to carry a show like Heroes? Don't blame the writers. Nothing personal against Mr. Grunberg. If NBC gave me a role on Heroes, I wouldn't be able to carry it either. But hey, I've never pretended to be an actor. Maybe I should come out with an Iphone App...

Please. It's not the time slot. I've streamed Heroes on Netflix from the beginning so I never watched a single episode on a TV (believe it or not). I'm just tired of the story. Season 1 was AWESOME... and then the writing just got so over-the-top unbelievable. Claire's real dad is Nathan. Sylar is a Petrelli, too. And Ando has powers--wait--is it lightning or a supercharger? And Matt Parkman divorced Janice because she was having that other cop's baby--but now it's baby Matt Parkman and his reason to stay in the fight? And just to keep Hiro from saving the day, do we have to give him a brain tumor? Come on... When Peter was ramping up on his powers, I started looking forward to a showdown between him and Sylar. But then Peter suddenly and inexplicably could only have one power at a time. And as for the showdown, we had to watch it with Claire from behind closed doors. I give up... What happened to the suspense? What happened to the mysterious man in the black ballcap? Or the clairvoyant painter who shows just enough of the future to whet our appetite? What happened to Future Hiro (with sword mojo), and "Save the cheerleader; save the world?" I have come to expect disappointment from Heroes (such as making a carnival the main plot setting for an entire season), but I keep watching because once in a while the story blows me away, just enough to make it worth it. Only now, I have finally run out of patience. Respectfully, Greg, it's not the time slot. It's definitely the writing. I'm really over Heroes.

Can't wait for Yowza to come to Canada. Heroes got hit hard with the time change because it ended up going head-to-head with Fringe, and what's with the overload of commercials? Starting the season at one time and ending it at another is not a great more by the network, keep Heroes at 9pm! I too have started following the actors to their other projects, and it makes it so much more interesting. Have to say that if they kill off Sylar/Gabriel or Parkman, I can't say I'd be happy about it. Replace Heroes with a reality TV show and I'll choke, and give up TV altogether. I hate reality TV, it's not real, and it's frankly quite annoying. Give Heroes at least one more season! It's one of the more interesting shows on TV, and I'm sorry if there are people out there who just don't get it when there's more than one storyline at once, but the single storyline is why I've stopped watching so many shows.

I really loved the last two epiesodes and i think they're openning up a whole new possibilities that won't feel like watching the same thing over and over again as it was in the past... so I certainly hope they give another season to wrap thing up, at least. If Sylar is in his Gabriel persona, he can stay cuz it should be interesting... then again I'm still disappointed they abandoned the baby Noah storyline back on Vol.3 when they killed Elle for nothing else than a crappy storyline for Sylar... if he goes back to his serial killer mode, then just kill him off, for realsies!

Heroes jumped the shark during Season 3. It's cancellation is long overdue. The show is on borrowed time. Expensive to produce and too campy for prime time. A reality show (pick any one), will generate higher ratings for 1/10th the cost. Matt Parkman, my mind is yawning, can you hear it? Heroes has transformed into a glorified soap opera. I won't miss it. Yowza is useless. Good luck finding a coupon, but if you do, you'll be lucky if the shop accepts it. I uninstalled the app after two establishments in my area refused to honor the coupons. Save yourselves the embarrassment. Why it received 2 out of 5 stars in the App Store, puzzles me. Should be 1 star.

I definitely want Heroes to be renewed for next season. I'm not a fan of killing off characters just for the sake of killing them off. Sylar is my favorite character so please don't kill him off! Since watching Heroes, I've become a fan of many of the actors and will try to follow them to any other work they may do.

Great interview. Grunny's so awesome I think that the end of Sylar will be Gabriel, Sylar will die, and the good guy Gabriel will be left.

Greg's iphone app is Yowza! - its a money saving/coupon type thing, but I'm not sure if it works in the UK or if it's just an American app

I think sylar should turn good and help the heroes. i think heroes should be back for a fifth season and for ever after.
