Q&A: Tim Kring talks 'Heroes' axe

How would you describe Conspiracy For Good?
"Conspiracy For Good is a secret organisation that has existed for thousands of years. You didn't know it existed and it's finally bubbling to the surface. It rolled out as a multi-platform narrative, starting online and moving into mobile and live events in London this summer. It combines narrative with causes, so that your participation has real-world implications for positive change in the world."
Where did the idea come from? What's your involvement?
"The idea was sort of inspired by my experience on Heroes. The 360 degree platform that we created around that show created a very big online community. Also, we talked a lot about saving the world on Heroes. When I realised that this audience was connected to one another and connected to this theme, I thought it would be great to find a way to harness this online energy and instead of 'saving the world' in fiction, we could have something really happen as a result of people's connection to a narrative. It just seemed like a logical evolution. I became very interested in this idea of 'social benefit storytelling' - by participating, you benefit because you are entertained and engaged, but it has real-world positive implications."
How do you see the project evolving?
"Well, the pilot for Conspiracy of Good was in many ways a unique idea, to launch this. The live events in London are the culmination of it. But this may not be what the ultimate role of Conspiracy For Good is. My feeling is that the project will be more pervasive and less specific to one location. It'll have to tap into mobile applications and social platforms in order to become a truly pervasive idea. The pilot was just one small story in the Conspiracy For Good universe."
When you were finishing up season four of Heroes, how much did you genuinely think it would also be a series finale?
"We really didn't know at all what the fate of the show was. In American television, you usually don't know if you're going to be picked up for another season. Unless you are an absolute smash-hit, which happens so rarely, most shows exist on the bubble all the time. I very much expected to be picked up for a fifth season. I thought it made tremendous sense for the network, both financially and creatively, so I was very surprised by the decision."
When and how did you hear that NBC had cancelled the show?
"We have the upfronts here every May, where the networks roll out their schedules for the year. It's almost always the week or so before that when all the big decisions are made. So during that week, I got the call from the network and heard their decision. As I said, I didn't expect it."
There have been rumours of a wrap-up movie. What's the latest with that?
"Unfortunately, there's no more news on it. But it looks like we're really going to start talking about it now. The summer months in television are always about preparing for the Fall launch of all the new shows, so I totally understand why there hasn't been a lot of discussion [until now]. Once the Fall season is launched, I fully believe that this discussion will get reignited in a very big way."
Looking back at the four seasons, which storylines were you most proud of?
"I was very committed to the idea of how the characters were connected to one another. So for me, the first season, where we didn't know how all the characters connected up, was in some ways the most exciting part of the storytelling. But I also felt that the fourth season was really strong."
There was some speculation that if Heroes came back for a fifth season, it might be 'rebooted' with an entirely new cast. Was that a serious possibility?
"Not really. I think some of that came from certain statements that I had made. In a way, the most exciting aspect of the show is the discovery of these powers and how the characters deal with them. Once the characters are fully in command of their powers, the big questions of the show become plot questions rather than character questions. The way around that for me was to repopulate the show with new people. But I think that was a bit of a naive goal, because the network uses the stars of a hit show to promote itself, which makes it difficult to recast. And obviously if the audience sees too many new faces, they start to long for the ones they fell in love with before. It's a complicated dance, so we decided to stay with the core original cast."
Do you think the writers' strike was ultimately to blame for the show's demise?
"No, I don't want to blame it on that. I think the paradigm has shifted in how people are consuming content and Heroes is very much at the forefront of that. Ironically while the traditional ratings fell, Heroes was the number one downloaded show in the world. It was above other big shows like Lost. So clearly there was a huge appetite for this show. This very passionate and large audience just didn't fit within the traditional mode."

Heroes was a fantastic idea and the first season had me totally hooked. Most poeple seem to be slating the 2nd and 3rd season but to be honest I loved them. I agree at certain points some of the story lines seemed to drag but sometimes you have to delve into major detail to explain a later to be revealed theory, or character motive.I think it would be a real shame for Heroes to end how it has with no tie-up at all.I think every viewer would like Tim Kring to be given the chance to make a final season knowing that it was coming to an end. Failing that a decent length movie would be ace although I think it would be hard tie-ing up so many loose ends in that short period of time.Bring back Heroes

My boyfriend & I became lovers of Heroes through the 1st season on DVD, at that time we were playing catch up. Now all caught up & left in suspense! I love the show, the characters, plot twist & turns, & Peter Petrelli and they really should tie stuff up with a TV movie since the axed the show on the network.

I agree that the first season was the best, with the huge flop that was season 2 and the slightly lesser season 3 flop in between. However, the thing that really annoys me about heroes being axed was that season 4 was so much better than 2 and 3. It made me think that heroes was really going somewhere again. Out of all the seasons, season 4 is the only one that can remotely compare with the brilliance of season 1. I just want everything to be rounded off, a cliff hanger is an incredibly annoying way to finish a show, though I doubt NBC will much care about that.

Of course we miss it, every season was exciting in it's own way. The multiple identities around Sylar/Nathan/Parkman in the last season was breathtaking. I want a whole next season!

I remember reading that at one point Heroes was being downloaded by more people than were watching on US tv. I wasn't surprised by that statement after the BBC waited almost 6 months before running the final season. I didn't download but waited to watch in it's full HD glory. Though it was annoying the last episode ran late and I missed the last 10 minutes. So that one I downloaded! I miss Heroes and hope it can come back in some form!

I love Heroes and miss it. I think what the show really needed was to take the Villains arc further. A big battle between the good guys and the bad guys is always exciting.Peter's character, one of the main guys in the show, was lost at the start of season 2. As was Sylar.I'd love to see a movie to wrap up all of the remaining storylines but I think the writers have to take it to the extreme and give us what we want.

I still miss it. Yes, it wasn't as good as the huge exciting start it had but nothing very rarely is. The 1st season we didn't know what the deal was. Then they all came together then they seemed to be stuck for stories & there was too much going on, too much flaff. The Ireland thing in season 2 was rubbish. But to end it on a ridiculous circus 'baddie' was lame.

HEROES never really recovered from the lacklustre series 2, and everything from that point on just went from bad to worse. The seemingly immortal Sylar's constant reappearances and changing side stretched the believeabolity of the show while great characters like Matt disappeared into the sidelines. And 3 incarnations of Ali Larter? Heroes is a sad example of a brilliant concept stretched by the networks to get as much form it. Shorter seasons and tighter storylines is what it needed, but didn't get sadly.

Agree, excellent first season, lost interest then came back for the 'Your my wife now Dave' ending at Papa Lazaru's circus. At least they weren't all dead like in Lost and Ashes, or were they?

It would have been nice if Tim had recognised the poorer storylines. The show had only 1 good season (season 1). It was poorly written and executed after this and was a waste of an excellent idea. In the end it was boring which is the worst scenario. Waste of great potential and deserved to be axed much earlier. Big shame.

I was so suprised to see hereos finish as I love the concept and story arc. I am going to feel my age here, as some may remember the 70's hit show The Tomorrow People, which I adored as a kid. This show rekindled those memories, as it seemed similar with a fresh take on an old theme. I just wish we could see an end as we grew attached to the characters and how they used the power. Will miss each of them!
