Limahl shot to fame with chart-topping singles including 'Too Shy' and 'The NeverEnding Story', but the '80s singer is no stranger to reality television, having appeared in the ITV comeback music show Hit Me, Baby, One More Time in 2005.

Before the new I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! contestant entered the jungle, we caught up with the fearful Kajagoogoo star - whose real name is Christopher Hamill - to find out his thoughts on the show and to discover exactly why he's heading Down Under.

Why did you sign up for I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!?
"I think this is such a challenge, both physically and mentally, and I wanted to have a go. I live in a jungle in London, but this is a different kind of jungle and I can't compare it to anything I have done before. And yet, if my own heroes and heroines - Christopher Biggins, Toyah Wilcox and Sheila Ferguson - can do it, then so can I."

If you're so petrified of snakes and bugs, why didn't you have hypnotherapy sessions ahead of your jungle appearance?
"I have phobias of everything you can name, but the problem with hypnotism is handing control over to someone else - and that is one of my phobias! What have I let myself in for? I am asking myself the same question."

How do you think you're going to handle life in the jungle?
"I think there is a very good chance that I could break down in the jungle. I am an emotional person, but I am not embarrassed by that. There is a real sense, however, that I am going to go for it. It is a journey and it is about winning those stars and coming out the other side, hopefully sane and in one piece."

What are you going to miss the most from home?
"I am going to miss my power shower in the morning. I'm going to miss my hairdryer. I'm going to miss my microwave porridge and my honey. I'm also going to miss my 42-inch plasma TV, my gadgets, my laptop, my MP3 player and all the usual home comforts. I am sorry to say this, but it's a never-ending list!"

What will viewers discover about you during your jungle experience?
"People know so little of me. Those hits - 'Too Shy' and 'NeverEnding Story' - captured the moment, but that was almost 30 years ago now. It's quite hard for me to relax and be Chris when I am not working. Just like an actor does with a role, it's comforting to hide behind my character. To suddenly reveal me, and the everyday me, scares me to death."

What is your main goal in appearing on the show? Do you want to return to the charts again?
"You know what? I feel so proud of everything I have achieved and it is lovely that my soundtracks take people back to their first love or holiday. I have gained value like an antique. If there is an '80s event, I normally get the call and that is a nice problem to have. But I really do want to get out of this first. That is my goal."

What is your role going to be in the jungle? How are you going to entertain your new celebrity friends?
"I would love to provide a little entertainment by singing. That would be nice. Choirs are very popular on TV right now, so perhaps I could form a choir in the jungle, too? I also like to see myself as an agony uncle. I could be the shoulder to cry on or the group psychologist."

How does your appearance on I'm a Celebrity compare to performing on stage?
"Doing I'm a Celebrity is much harder than performing on stage. It is completely unknown territory and I am going to give it my best shot. I am pretty sure it will be an experience of a lifetime."

Why do you think the show is popular?
"The whole concept of the show is a brilliant one and to throw people out of their comfort zone is the reason why I'm a Celebrity is so popular. I do hope I walk away from this experience not scared of anything. Wish me luck!"

I'm a Celebrity continues tonight (November 15) at 8.30pm on ITV1.
