Reports in May suggested that the troubled ex-footballer had been axed from the lineup after failing a psychiatric test.
However, Gascoigne has now told producers that he is on the road to recovery and will be monitored over the next three months before a final decision is made over his involvement, according to the Daily Star.
A source said: "He is really confident he can handle the pressure of the show. He thinks it is the perfect way to demonstrate to the world he is on the mend."
Gascoigne has fought public battles with alcohol and depression in the past. Last year, he was sectioned twice under the Mental Health Act.
The insider added: "It's great news he feels well enough to take on something like I'm A Celeb. But we will not be taking any chances.
"He will only enter the jungle if we are certain he is fit and well physically and mentally - and that the stress of the show won't harm his recovery."
