Reports have claimed that the former footballer was rejected for this year's run because of his ongoing personal problems.
Swash, who was crowned king of the jungle in 2008, told PA that he believes Gascoigne could have been a good contestant in different circumstances.
Discussing his expectations for the new show, he said: "Well, it's all really secretive so they don't really tell you much, I probably know just about as much as you do.
"It would have been nice to see Gazza in there but he can't do it unfortunately."
The ex-EastEnders actor also confirmed reports that he will be fronting ITV2 spinoff I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here Now! with Caroline Flack this year, saying that the job "should be good".
I'm A Celebrity... will return to ITV1 in November.
