'I'm a Celebrity' 2012 launches with 10.3 million, beats 'X Factor'

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here entered its tenth year with a massive audience of over 10 million viewers last night.

The Sunday night launch show for the programme's 12th series averaged 10.26m (40.6%) for ITV1 between 9pm and 10.30pm.

Meanwhile, a further 345,000 (2%) watched the likes of EastEnders star Charlie Brooks and disgraced Tory MP Nadine Dorries enter the jungle on ITV +1.

For the first time since 2006, it looks like I'm a Celeb will finish above X Factor in ITV's most-watched broadcasts of the week, as the network's singing contest only logged 8.88m (33.3%) in the 8pm hour, and 186k on +1.

I'm a Celeb couldn't match the 2011's 11.5m premiere figure, although it's much higher than the 2010 opener.

The effect of I'm a Celebrity took away a large chunk of The Xtra Factor's ratings, as the ITV2 spinoff show could only attract 393k (1.8%) at 9pm. I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here Now's opener, on the other hand, managed a much more impressive 807k (6.1%).

Strictly Come Dancing - which culminated in Fern Britton's departure - ruled the roost with 10.58m (40.7%) at 7.30pm, setting a new series high, beating The X Factor's respective results show for a fourth consecutive week since its historic victory on October 21.

Holly Willoughby's Surprise, Surprise held a remarkably solid 4.08m (16.4%) in a difficult 7pm hour that BBC One dominated with Countryfile, which averaged 7.34m (32.9%), as well as the aforementioned Strictly.

Antiques Roadshow (6.17m/23.1%) managed an even more impressive feat up against X Factor, after which Andrew Marr's History of the World bowed out with a high of 3.38m (12.7%).

Elsewhere in the 9pm slot, Channel 4's Homeland also recorded its best second season audience with 2.11m (7.9%) and 178k (0.9%) on +1, clinching another fairly comfortable win over BBC Two's Dragons' Den which had 1.52m (5.7%). Movie Valkyrie appealed to 1.23m (5.6%) over on Channel 5.

During the two channel's 10pm comedy battle, Harry and Paul came out on top, albeit with just 858k (3.7%) over Friday Night Dinner - the Channel 4 sitcom has been struggling since its move to Sunday, with the latest episode drawing just 525k (2.3%) and 159k on timeshift.

Overall, ITV1 strolled home to victory with 30.8% (+1: 0.8%) versus BBC One's 22.9%. The other terrestrial channels were closely huddled together as Channel 4 took third place with 4.7% (+1: 0.5%). BBC Two followed with 4.4%, and Channel 5 finished last with 4.3% (+1: 0.3%).
