The contestants were seen flirting and becoming close in the jungle last month, but Matthews insisted that their romance was made to look more significant than it was.
She told OK! magazine: "It was edited to make it look like we were doing things 24 hours a day, when we weren't. We hadn't even kissed! People said we snogged in the jungle but it was only a goodnight kiss on the cheek."
Bannerman agreed that mixing footage from different times could give the impression that any of the campmates were more than friends, saying: "It's been built up as some love story but it wasn't. The love story could've been with anyone - [Christopher] Biggins, Rodney [Marsh] or J [Jason Brown], they were all pretty tactile."
The couple are currently staying together at the ex-Catatonia star's home in Wales.
Matthews' ex-husband recently warned Bannerman that the singer will soon get bored of him.
