On December 23, the publication ran with the headline "Macca versus Mucca on Ice" in reference to the fact that Mills is appearing alongside McCartney's second cousin Emily Atack on the ITV1 skating show.
In an apology printed today, the Daily Star acknowledged that the headline "may have been taken to mean that Heather was to compete against her former husband Sir Paul McCartney, so reigniting a family feud".
The newspaper added: "As the article stated, it is Sir Paul's second cousin Emily Atack who is a competitor. In fact she and Heather are on very good terms. We apologise for this misleading article and any distress we may have caused."
The Guardian reports that the Press Complaints Commission brokered the apology after receiving a complaint from Mills.
Mills used her Twitter page to comment on the article in question at the time, urging tabloids to "cut the crap" in their reporting.
