What The Judges Said: 'Dancing on Ice' grand final

By
The final three celebrities battled it out last night to be crowned as the new Dancing on Ice champion, dancing showcases that they had choreographed themselves, reprising their favourite routines and tackling Torvill and Dean's famed Bolero. Keep reading to find out what judges Jason Gardiner, Robin Cousins and Emma Bunton had to say:

Sam Attwater and Brianne Delcourt

'Footloose'

Jason (9.5): "Actually, what a feisty opening for a final. It had a beginning, a middle and an end. I thought the choreography was very clever, particularly the Q&A that you did between yourself and the pro skaters, and the way in which you worked with the pro skaters was incredibly accomplished. I particularly loved the passing helicopters as well. The reason why I didn't give you the full ten was because the counter-lever lift just didn't move around fast enough for me, it just didn't have the excitement that we would have liked. But you are a true champion, and it was a wonderful opening. Well done."

Robin (10): "We've been waiting week after week for that charismatic Sam to show up and you showed up in abundance tonight. I thought the whole routine was very well put together, it was very obvious what was happening throughout, and I thought the most important thing [was] you were very much the leader, but you were the leader of a great ensemble, you worked really well together, and I just thought it finally paid off, and you've saved the best 'til last. Now's the night to do it!"

Emma (10): "Amazing! Do you know what I loved? You really showcased yourself as a real performer tonight. The most fun and expressive I've ever seen you through this show. It was absolutely brilliant. I think maybe the pain was pushing you through and giving you that extra bit of a push, which was brilliant, and it's nice to see that you can also be very creative."

Final: Sam Attwater
'Riverdance'
Original score: 27 (Jason 9, Robin 9, Emma 9)

Jason (9.5): "Agreed [with Robin]. I mean, the first time round, this absolutely astounded us because, for all those reasons that you say, we didn't think it was going to translate onto the ice, and you proved that it can. Tonight, you gave us an amazing performance. You've upped your marks, but again, the stutters at the beginning - it is the final, we can't have any of those, and so we are going to deduct [points]."

Robin (9.5): "It was a much stronger performance, and you've just taken it to the next level. There is a comfort factor now to watching you do it. However, there were just those two little stutters at the very beginning which I was thankful didn't then continue through the rest of the routine, because the lifts were strong, the drape was great, your command of the attention was throughout the whole thing... but just that little bit at the beginning."

Emma (9.5): "Yeah, I think because [of] the stutters at the beginning, I think you were just trying to make everything perfect. Because, you know what? We are so lucky to have you on this show, because you've been an amazing skater the whole way through, but I've also watched you become an amazing performer."

Total: 28.5

'Bolero'

Jason: "Sam and Brianne, that was incredibly captivating [and] everything that I would like to see from a bolero. I believed that the two of you were passionately involved in some sort of a struggle. But, most importantly, you allowed time to breathe and to execute everything, so that we could enjoy it with you. It was beautiful."

Robin: "I thought it was terrific. I love the fact that it was about the overall piece and very much about the emotion of the bolero rather than finding the next place to do the next big trick. It had some really nice tricks in there, but it was really about the piece and you connected with it in a way that you didn't with the other two performances earlier, so that was great to see."

Emma: "[It's] such a privilege to dance the bolero, and you put your own stamp on it, which I loved. It was intense, I couldn't take my eyes off you. Brilliant."

Laura Hamilton and Colin Ratushniak

'Express Yourself'

Jason (8.5): "You know, Laura, it's such an iconic number, that, and the video as well, and unfortunately for me tonight, I just didn't engage with it as much as I'd hoped. I mean, take the boys out of the equation, you know, and have a look at what you were doing, I felt it was all too very laboured and set up. It lost the dynamism that I was expecting to see from this. It didn't really go anywhere for me, it was too set up."

Robin (8.5): "I'm absolutely, sadly agreeing [with Jason]. I think you have this great charisma, as Emma pointed out, but really I was feeling that there was so much concentrating on making sure that you were in the right placement in each point of every element that it just lost that spontaneity. It maybe didn't have that fire that I was expecting from you."

Emma (9): "You lucky girl, three gorgeous boys to play with! That was nice! Overall, your performances [are] always brilliant, but for me tonight, it was missing that sexy, Madonna feel, and that's what I wanted to see, that's why I couldn't give you the ten. But your signature back-flip - from the first time you did it to now - is just amazing. You've done a great thing to come such a long way."

Final: Laura Hamilton
'I'm So Excited'
Original score: 28.5 (Jason 9.5, Robin 9.5, Emma 9.5)

Jason (10): "Laura, I have to say, my darling, I take my hat off to you. That was incredible! That's it! That's what I'm talking about, sweetheart! You have just proven why you are in this competition. Three weeks ago, that was incredible, but you just took it to another level. I am so excited by you, and you have just come out here and shown exactly what you're made of, and that is a true champion."

Robin (10): "Everything I didn't like very much about the first routine... you've brought it in buckets in this, young lady! You looked at us, you were engaged with the audience here, you engaged with the audience at home and you moved with such speed and power [that] Colin had no choice to deliver the tricks at his level, and you performed along with him. It was fantastic."

Emma (10)

Total: 30

'Bolero'

Jason: "Well, Laura and Colin... you guys have been absolutely brilliant, you know, throughout this series. This bolero, for me, was slow to get going, I'll be honest with you. It just didn't find its place in enough time for me. The second half [was] absolutely better than the first half. It lacked the choreographic finesse of Sam's, but that comes down to the inexperience I think that we have with the two of you. But overall, you have been an amazing competitor."

Robin: "I'm going to echo what Jason has just said. To see that you could have gone out, thank goodness you didn't in your first week. You have really given us, week by week, a great performance. And yes, the first half wasn't quite what you wanted intensity-wise. The step-up lift was brilliantly done, and great control from you. And I loved the ending. I just thought it really came together in the second half."

Emma: "Again, such an iconic dance, and I think you did it justice. I love that you kept the intensity without being a crazy lady, which we get sometimes! But beautifully executed."

Chloe Madeley and Michael Zenezini

'Dirty Dancing'

Jason (8.5): "Well, look. It was an okay recreation of Dirty Dancing, and, you know, you coped well with it being on ice. However, when you're putting in iconic sort of... signatures that we all know, like the table top lift, yours looked like a collapsing card table actually. You missed a couple of lifts tonight - and I know you're saying you were having an amazing amount of fun - but maybe you had a little bit too much fun, which is why things went wrong."

Robin (8): "Baby wasn't just surly in a corner, but she wasn't where she needed to be for two of the three big skating tricks she had tonight! And if you are gonna do an iconic table top [lift], you've gotta be able to hit that position. Whether it was Michael's slip, or it wasn't quite... the timing wasn't there, and then in the drape, you had two perfect drapes happening behind you, which obviously, for me, it just pointed out that your leg wasn't in the right place and Michael didn't quite have you right for there. The next bit was great and you did look like you were enjoying it, but you also looked like it was just not quite working the way it needed to."

Emma (9): "I feel like every time you perform, you really light the ice up and I enjoyed your performance so much. Yes, there was a little bit of finesse missing for me, a tiny bit, but otherwise... it's every girl's dream to do this dance and these two are just getting on!"

Total: 25.5

Final: Chloe Madeley
'Kiss Kiss'
Original score: 23.5 (Jason 7.5, Robin 7.5, Emma 8.5)

Robin (9.5): "It was so tight and so secure tonight, but I have to bang on - as the skater on the panel - the transitions and the difficulty of the footwork and choreography that you execute within this number has to be taken into consideration. It was brilliant tonight."

Emma (9.5): "The performance tonight was much stronger, much tighter than the last time you performed it. But Chloe, do you know what? I have loved watching you progress. I feel like we have watched this woman before our eyes. It's just been fantastic, so well done. And you've come the furthest for me, and I think you deserve credit for that."
