Cheeky Girls make millions
Published Thursday, Jul 24 2003, 12:05 BST | By Neil Wilkes
The Cheeky Girls have earnt £1.5 million apiece in the past year, according to The Mirror today.
The transylvanian duo have raked in more than Pop Idol's Will Young or Gareth Gates and ten times as much as Popstars bands Girls Aloud and One True Voice combined.
The 20-year-olds, Gabriela and Monica, attribute their wealth to being careful with the pennies, as well as the fact that their mum Margrit writes their songs, so they keep all of the royalties.
"We don't live like princesses and we certainly don't spend, spend, spend. We work, work, work," said Gabriela. "All our clothes come from Topshop or Miss Sixty and we never wear designer stuff. What's the point? It's too expensive.
"We only go to nightclubs if we are performing and then we come straight home. And we don't use limos, we have a large van which our stepfather Ray drives.
"In the past year we had just one holiday which was only four days. But we are happy because what has happened to us is what we dreamed about and we absolutely love what we do."
Their new single, 'Hooray Hooray (It's A Cheeky Holiday)', is released on August 4.
