Popstars earns for Granada

Reality series Popstars could earn Granada a significant windfall if its resulting 'product' is a success.
Under the contract with Polydor, Granada gets a cut of any profit the band makes, according to the Media Guardian. Series producer Nigel Lythgoe will not get a share of the group's success.
A Granada spokesman said: "Most of the research has been paid for by Granada - the auditioning has cost hundreds of thousands of pounds - so Granada will have a stake in the band. But the band is on a very good deal. Many artists get completely stitched up and turn out to be virtual employees of record companies. This will not be the case with Popstars.
"If they are the new Spice Girls, we will do very nicely. Equally, if they turn out to be the new 911, the cost will go down as part of the budget."
Three albums have been signed up for the as-yet untitled group, and a single release will coincide with the last episode of the ITV series. Any future 'follow-ups' of the band will have to be handled very carefully, however.
"There are very strict rules regarding undue prominence," he said. "If, for example, the first single is a huge hit but the second is a flop and the band suddenly turns up in an ITV show, questions will be asked. We have been through all of this with the Independent Television Commission and what we can and cannot do is clear at every level."
