Auditions begin for "Popstars: The Rivals"
Published Monday, Aug 5 2002, 18:37 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Auditions for Popstars: The Rivals began yesterday in London, with over 400 hopefuls turning out.
The wannabe singers were invited to the audition after sending in video tapes of themselves singing. Thousands turned up to auditions for the original series in 2000, but many were not heard due to time constraints.
Popstars: The Rivals will create a boy band and a girl band who will release rival singles to battle it out for the Christmas number one spot. The judging panel, which includes Pop Idol's Pete Waterman, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and Westlife's manager Louis Walsh, will whittle down the auditionees to 10 boys and 10 girls who will live in neighbouring houses.
Each week, viewers will vote to evict one boy and one girl until five of each sex -- the final band lineups -- are remaining. Davina McCall will host the series, which is due to air in October.
One auditionee at yesterday's first heat claimed that Halliwell had made a jibe about her weight. "When I finished singing, Pete or Louis said I was a larger-than-life character," said 19-year-old Carol Lynch. "Then Geri said: 'yeah, very larger than life' in a sarky way. I was all smiles when I walked out but I couldn't believe it. I'm not eating food and throwing it up in a toilet for anyone. It doesn't really bother me, I'm not upset. All my friends and family say I've got talent and should just keep going for it."
Further auditions will be held later this month in Manchester and Glasgow, also by invitation-only, but due to "overwhelming demand," an extra -- open -- audition will be staged this Friday at the Wembley Conference Centre.
