Choker for Chenai

Bonfire night at The X Factor.
Would there be fireworks?
Brenda
I really love Brenda’s voice and she was great again this week. The judges raved about her but I thought the actual song sounded very dated. Not Brenda’s fault of course.
My fear was that brilliant though she was, she might be affected by the syndrome that seems to put acts on early in the show at the bottom of the voting.
Rating:
Nicholas
Nicholas undoubtedly has potential but if that doesn’t translate to performances on the night then he’s wasting a superb opportunity.
He was spectacularly poor this week
Rating:
Andy
From Andy the great singer to Andy the great crooner. A shift in style this week that he pulled off superbly.
I still get the feeling that he is singing within himself and there could well be better to come.
Rating:
Chenai
This was Chenai’s best performance yet but somehow there was something missing. I think Sharon’s comments were spot on. Simon was a tad harsh.
Chenai’s efforts have improved as her confidence has grown and I just hope Simon’s snipes don’t knock her back too much.
Rating:
Chico
Chico’s falsetto opening of Kiss was more Mickey Mouse than Prince but strangely it worked.
When he moved into singing the song “properly??? that worked a treat too.
He was great this week. I’m stunned.
Rating:
Journey South
The boys sounded great this week but for some reason they looked absolutely terrified.
The acoustic style fitted them like a glove and this is the first week that I’ve felt they had a chance in the competition.
Rating:
Maria
Maria took on James Blunt’s Beautiful and for me it didn’t quite come off. Maybe it’s because the original version has been etched into all our brains, I don’t know but it just didn’t feel right somehow.
Rating:
Shayne
You make me feel brand new felt anything but brand new to me. A competent vocal performance but he’s not going to pull up any trees unless he can go that extra mile.
At least Sharon managed her critique without being smutty.

The Conway Sisters
This caused me to have a flashback to the Nolans singing on a seventies variety show. The Nolans of course could sing.
It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t that nice either.

Dek’s Verdict
1. Brenda
2. Andy
3. Journey South
Worst of the night: Nicholas
The showdown
I thought The Conways were really lucky to stay out of the bottom two.
I wondered whether Louis’ increasingly cranky attitude had played a part in two of his acts being bottom of the pile.
The face off between Chenai and Nicholas was interesting because based on the night’s performances I thought Chenai deserved to stay in but I thought Nicolas had more potential going forward, which is basically what Simon said.
Nicholas can consider himself a very lucky man to still be there.
