Scott Bruton
After exiting The X Factor in week three, many people would have expected Scott Bruton to fade into reality show obscurity - but the former Bluecoat from Manchester obviously had other ideas. He's just nabbed a leading role in the West End play Dreamboats And Petticoats, based on the best-selling album from last year. DS caught up with Scott to find out more.

How would you describe your new musical?
"It's got songs from the 1950s and 1960s. I won't give too much away but it has a really good vintage feel to it. It's brilliant for all ages and anybody that loves music should come and see it. My character is called Bobby. He's an Essex boy so I've been fumbling with my Essex accent!"

How did you get the role?
"I was asked to audition about five weeks ago. I honestly didn't know anything about it until my agent phoned me up. I came straight down to London and auditioned for the part and here I am in my first West End role!"

Are you upset that you're not taking part in the X Factor live tour?
"Obviously it would have been a dream come true for me to perform for all those people but I'm very lucky to be in the situation I'm in now. I'm not going to take anything for granted or think of what could have been. I'm doing very well for myself in my own right."

Will you go see it?
"Maybe, if I get some time off. I've been given a couple of VIP tickets if I want them. I suppose it would be nice to go back and see everybody."

Have you kept in contact with the other contestants?.
"I've kept in touch with a couple of people like Laura and Bad Lashes. I went to TGI Friday's with Laura recently and then out for some drinks in Soho. I've spoken to Alexandra a few times and I went out with JLS in Basildon last week. It's a shame I've lost touch with people like Rachel and Daniel. Daniel was the dad of the house and I really clicked with Rachel so it's a shame."

What about Simon Cowell - have you spoken to him recently?
"Once or twice since I left the show but not really."

Are you still happy that you did The X Factor?
"Yeah, I really wouldn't change it for the world. When I first auditioned I didn't expect to get where I got - I thought I would be out at boot camp. I kept thinking someone's going to pinch me in a minute and I'm going to wake up at the bus stop on the way to work!"

What else have you been up to since the show?
"I did a tour of the Caribbean over Christmas. I was in places like Barbados, St. Lucia and Tortuga. I was a bit angry though because there were only four days when it didn't rain! One of them was Christmas Day. My mate rang me and I said I was lying on the beach sunbathing, about to go for a barbeque, and he hung up!"

Where do you want to be in a year's time?
"I'm going to set myself some standards now! This is my next goal - I'd like to be on my way to Broadway. That would probably be the next big thing I'd dream for now because I've done X Factor and broken into the West End."

What about an album?
"I'd really love to release an album. I don't know who'd buy it though! To be honest I wasn't that good on the show. You have to be realistic and I'm never going to be a worldwide selling artist or anything like that. I think the clever thing for me to do now is focus on the West End because I tried making it as a pop star and I failed."

Is there anyone whose career you hope to emulate?
"Gareth Gates. He just got the leading role in Joseph And His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and I'm really happy for him. He's obviously done the pop scene and now he's breaking into theatre, so his career has gone pretty well."

Scott can be seen in Dreamboats And Petticoats at selected theatres around the country starting February 19.
