The Girls Aloud star spoke out after the four-piece girl group found themselves in the bottom two alongside Bad Lashes in last night's show.
Girlband eventually escaped the boot and they have since vowed to impress the public with their next performance.
Speaking on The Xtra Factor last night, Cole explained: "I think it's really tough for girlbands because you have to find that niche - something that's missing, something that's not out there at the moment."
Meanwhile, Simon Cowell revealed that he chose to save Girlband in the judges' vote because he was impressed by their passion.
He said: "I thought [they had] a better song, I also thought that because Girlband were on earlier they were in a worse slot. I just thought they meant it more on that final performance."
